A gang of armed men robbed the Carnival City casino injuring three men in the process.
Early on Monday morning a police reservist and two security guards were shot and seriously wounded in an armed robbery at Carnival City casino.
According to Captain Julia Claasen, an armed group entered the casino just after midnight and made towards to casino vault. While Claasen couldn’t confirm the number of people in the gang, eNCA reported that there were about 25 people.
After entering the casino the gang ordered all the patrons to lie on the floor after which they started using a hammer and a grinder to open the vault. It has not yet been disclosed how much money the gang got away with.
One of the shift mangers managed to alert the police, however, before they arrived the gang had assaulted six patrons.
Claasen said that “when they tried to flee a shootout ensued between the suspects and police, in which, two security guards and one reserve officer from Brakpan police station were shot.”
After the shootout three men were admitted to hospital in critical condition. Police are still trying to track down suspects and no arrests have yet been made.
