It may only be a few months old, but figures released recently have indicated that the Ladbrokes’ South African online operation is already achieving spectacular results. Since its launch back in August this year, the local response from South Africa has surpassed everyone’s expectations. Uptake for the Rugby World Cup was solid and much better than anticipated, which gave the fledging operation a much needed boost.
Local support has been huge; the latest stats show that registered local customers has increased by 50% month on month, with an increase of 40% in the number of bets placed. Betting turnover via Ladbrokes South African branding site has increased by 25%.
The success is welcome news for the bookmaker and online gambling operator, who became the third UK based gambling company to enter the South African market by partnering with Kairo International Group. The operation has been quick to indentify the needs of its local customer base, offering payment options beyond the usual credit and debit cards.
"Customers have been quick to take up Ladbrokes' different payment options [and] payment methods now include bank transfers, Ukash vouchers (which can be purchased from Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay and other outlets), and via Moneybookers, an e-wallet solution."
South Africa’s online sports betting market is developing rapidly; it is already worth R660 million and is expected to grow to about R800 million over the next two years. The key areas of growth are expected to be in the top local sports such as horse racing, rugby, football, cricket, golf and tennis.
