The on-going case of South Africa versus Piggs Peak online casino has run its course, the casino has closed
The courts in South Africa have once and for all upheld the ban on online gambling in the country. The long drawn out case between the country of South Africa and Piggs Peak online casino has been decided in its finality by the Appeal Court of South Africa sitting in Bloemfontein. The position of the casino was that their activities were legal in South Africa due to the fact that their servers were located elsewhere but Justice Jonathan Heher disagreed. The biggest online casino in the country now has no option but to stop all services immediately.
In a statement released by the casino, Piggs Peak stated that; "With immediate effect Casino Enterprises (Pty) Limited trading as Piggs Peak Casino, Piggs Peak Poker, Piggs Peak Bingo and Volcanic Gold Casino will no longer accept bets from any players in South Africa. Should you have a positive balance in your Piggs Peak Casino account, please make a withdrawal. Please note: Our casino will only be accessible by players outside the borders of South Africa."
The irony of this case is that it comes in the wake of the Gambling Review Board recommending to the government in South Africa that gambling be legalised. Criminal proceedings can still be brought against players and casinos while the government mulls over those recommendations. It could take years for the law to be amended and most likely will. This means that the much needed legal precedent that the South African National Gambling board needed has arrived and that they can begin with the many other cases that they currently have on file. Online gaming is now completely illegal in South Africa.
