The Spanish tennis player hopes that the injury he received will not stand on his way to the finish in Wimbledon
Rafael Nadal’s performance in Wimbledon may be affected by the foot injury he suffered when playing yesterday against Juan Martin Del Potro. In a difficult four hour long game, the ATP No. 1 was pretty close to leaving the match in the middle, following the injury to his left foot received during a routine forehand.
He had to spend 10 minutes on a bench, being treated for the injury, though after the pain was redirected by a tape applied to the injured area, he continued to play and managed to win with 7-6 (8/6) 3-6 7-6 (7/4) 6-4. Rafa will face Mardy Fish tomorrow in the last eight of the tournament and if won, Andy Murray in the semi-finals. It isn’t clear though, whether he is fit enough to do so.
When asked about the condition of his foot, Nadal said: “I don’t know I have to check. I have to go to do an MRI. I don’t know right now. I felt really bad during the first set. At 6-5 I felt terrible. I felt that I had broken my foot. The point at deuce and the point that gave me set point, I felt terrible.”
He went on to add: “I asked for the trainer at that moment when the game was done. I seriously didn’t know at that moment if I had a chance to continue playing. At 6-5, I pushed hard with the forehand and I felt like something crushed, there in the back of the outside of the foot.”
