Delaware may introduce legalized sports betting to the state's race tracks following Maryland's legalization of slots. Read more here.
Concern has been raised in Maryland, USA, following the recent legalization of slot machines at horse racing tracks. These race tracks, claim politicians, take away from Maryland's neighbouring states, and they are now interested in returning the blow by taking advantage of their rare ability to introduce sports betting.
Despite that sports betting has been illegal in all American states since 1992, Nevada, Montana, Oregon and Delaware have managed to bypass these federal regulations in a legal manner. These states were given the right to ignore federal regulations over sports betting due to the fact that each of them hosted legal sports betting at the time that the law was passed. Of these 4 states, Nevada is the only one allowed to host sports betting within actual casinos.
Lawmaking authorities in Delaware are now considering introducing some forms of sports betting for the purpose of making up for potential customer losses that are feared from the Maryland slot machines. Industry analysts have predicted that the legalization of sports betting at the state's Dover Tracks could bring in revenues of up to $26.3 million.
In addition to this, Delaware is also expected to receive a blow worth $200 million in deficit budget cuts. Despite that until now, Governor Ruth Ann Minner has been opposed to legalized sports betting, the upcoming administration of Governor Jack Markell is expected to be slightly more open minded.
Meanwhile, regulars at Dover Downs are in favour of legalized sports betting at the race tracks, claiming that if people will do it regardless of its legality then the state might as well profit from it.
